Travel Tuesday: Florence, Italy

Firenze. How I miss this elegant, historic Tuscan city in the heart of Italy. The summer before my junior year of college, I studied abroad in Florence with a few of my close friends. The Italian way of life absolutely captivated me, and I adored spending a summer immersed in Italian culture (and incredible, Tuscan wine I might add).

Katie also visited Florence while she was traveling with Semester at Sea, so Florence is a beloved place for both of us. Here is just a taste of the places we loved to go while staying in the city - we hope you enjoy!

The Sights:

Duomo. Make sure you climb Florence's beautiful landmark for a stunning panoramic view of the city.

Ponte Vecchio. Walk over this Medieval stone bridge in the evening - the illuminated lights of the Tuscan homes by the water will leave you speechless.

Piazzale Michaelango. Enjoy a margarita pizza and a bottle of wine, and sit on the steps to watch the sun go down.

Mercato Centrale. Find local produce and fresh meats, and browse through the market of Italian vendors.

Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. This is one of the world's oldest pharmacies, and the architecture and decor inside is enough to make you want to stay for hours. (As well as the sweet aromas of gorgeous soaps and perfumes).

Galleria dell'Accademia. The art in this museum will take your breath away. Spend a morning strolling through the gallery of many incredible works of Renaissance art, including Michelangelo's masterpiece, the David.

The Eats & Drinks:

Aqua Al Due. This is a must-go restaurant in Florence, famous for its blueberry and balsamic steak. Order both and share with a friend - your taste buds will thank you for years down the road (if not forever).

Gusta Pizza. Gusta is a staple for cheap, yet delicious wood-fired pizza. Facing the long line and hectic inside of the small setting is worth it for a slice of this melt-in-your-mouth Tuscan specialty.

Trattoria 4 Lioni. Take the waiter's advice and order the chef's special. One of my favorite memories in Florence was enjoying 4 Lioni's pear infused pasta dish and spending the evening with old and new friends.

Old Stove. Start your night with a refreshing pitcher of sangria to share, right in the heart of the city.

The "Secret" Bakery. When you arrive in Florence, you may hear whisperings about secret bakeries that open in the middle of the night to hand out straight-out-of-the-oven chocolate croissants. Yes, it's the truth.

Most importantly, though, what is Italy without good wine? You can hardly every go wrong sipping on a glass of Chianti any time of day. What I would do to get my hands on a bottle and sit in a Florentine cafe again.
